smiling for her

I’ll admit that I have tried many times to just cry. Feeling that I had some pent-up emotion - just waiting to be released. Thinking that I would feel better. Wondering if I just haven’t realized yet that it is real.

And yet every time my mind wanders, all I can do - is smile.

I smile at the thought of her laugh. I smile at her eternal optimism. I smile at her sense of humor. I smile at memories. Oh, so many memories. I smile at the remembrance of her - and how special she is to so many. How special she is to me.

I smile at how she took me in. Almost as one of her own children. I felt loved, as one of her own. I smile at the zest for life that she - and her family - gave me when I needed it. I smile at the light that beamed into the darkest of places.

I’ll never forget her bringing me mammoth packs of Spearmint Tic-Tacs from the commissary. My pre-Sunkist addiction. I haven’t had one since ... but today? Today, I want one.

I’ll never forget ice-skating in Montgomery - and how wretchedly abysmal our performance was. I remember fondly, her watching from the sidelines - laughing and cheering us on.

I’ll never forget whitewater rafting - and the time she split her pants wide open. I smile just thinking of the laughs that were had. And her willingness to forever preserve it in film.

I’ll never forget the petting zoo experience with that dang goat. And figuring out, all too late, just why he was smiling for the camera.

I’ll never forget playing Catchphrase with her for Mandy’s 19th birthday.

I'll never forget that she gave me permission to throw a water balloon in her own home in order to win a water fight. Which I did.

I’ll never forget that Orlando trip - especially Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges. And that hilarity-filled trip to Target.

I’ll never forget all the little instances that, as memory serves, she merely danced around the peripheral of. In hindsight, it seems as if she was always right in the middle. In heart, she certainly was.

I’ll never forget ... well. So many things.

It’s been a long time since I’ve waltzed into that house and made myself at home. It’s been a long time since I’ve created a precious memory there. There are many reasons for this - each more asinine than the last, in retrospect. None of which is remotely important to me anymore. In all honesty - it’s shameful that it ever was. But I never did give up the love that I have for her. Or her family - of which she was the heart. Still is. And always will be.

I’ll forever be grateful for listening to that quiet prompting to go see her at the hospital that night. I now chuckle to myself at how I hesitated outside the door for a fraction of a second - unsure of what I’d see on the other side. And yet, I wasn’t surprised to see her smiling face. Or to feel her positive attitude. Or to hear her jokes about her incision - and how it wasn’t a bother, as she was past the ‘bikini stage’. Though, as she laughed, it would have been a problem a few years back. I loved that we talked about Harry Potter - and it brought back memories of long ago when we were all reading the books for the first time, and seemingly falling over each other just to talk about their goodness. My heart warmed when she asked about Ammon - as she always did. And I’ll always remember the surge of faith I felt when she responded, “If I’m meant to go, I’ll go. If I’m supposed to stick around - then that’s what I’ll do.”

I don’t question it. I know Heavenly Father does not make mistakes. I don’t pretend to understand it, though - and I don’t think I’m meant to. I mourn this loss along with many others - yet I am so grateful to have known her at all. A blessing that I cherish. I cannot begin to comprehend the difficulty her family is facing. My pain certainly does not compare. Some may say I have no right to shed even a tear. And yet my heart knows what others minds do not.

Of course, I am crying now. I think she would want me to smile. It would certainly be a good way to remember her and her unwavering spirit. When I think of her, I think of light. I think of warmth. I think of a laugh that brings with it its own sunshine.

I think of smiles. So that’s what I’ll do.

Of all the things that there are to remember in my life - the good and the bad - I’m honored and blest to say that the good far outweighs the other. I have so many to thank for that - this family at the top of that list. When I reflect on the past, I try hard to remember the good. Remember the good ones.

When thinking about her ... there’s not much left after that.

Yes. Remember the good ones.

Yesterday. It was a perfect morning - crisp and bright. A day that emulated her. It was a beautiful reunion of souls and faces - bringing with them a flood of delectable memories - all a testament to the incredible person that we all love so well. I wasn’t surprised to see such a full house. Or so many moist eyes, even though the faces they call home were smiling. I wasn’t surprised to feel of that powerful spirit which buoyed my heart. All things that reflect with good tidings, the person she is. In truth, I felt her.

As is usually the case when I have a lot on my mind - I turn to my pen. And I’m left with this. A lot of random musings about a lot of little things that probably don’t matter to anyone else but me. And yet they do matter to me. Very much. And that, today, is enough.

I echo my first thought, and reply that I have, indeed, realized that this is all very real. My heart and my mind are finally on the same plane. Yesterday made certain of that. And yet, while at times I seem to be floundering aimlessly, a bit of flotsam in a sea of pain - I find that I am not sinking. The knowledge that I have of our Heavenly Father’s plan, has become my raft. My memories keep it afloat. The hope of tomorrow's horizon is my gentle breeze. And my smiles ... they bring with them the sunshine.

Today, I am thankful. Today, I continue to pray for this families’ peace. Today ... I smile for her.

the view from down here

I feel sorry for him. Really, I do.

Judging by the parents he has been landed with: He has no hope for height.

It must be fairly daunting to view the world from this angle. Daunting ... and annoying.
No wonder he’s resorted to climbing.

Remember that I feel sorry for him. Because I can relate. But ... all things considered ... help me.

i will survive

Those who know me well - or have read this blog during my lower points - also know all about my addiction issues.

I do not smoke. But I do enhale.

I do not get drunk. But I do drink.

Meet him: “My name is Sunkist. I’m her vice. And her crutch. And her life-line. We’ve had a long and happy life together - but now she wants to kick me to the curb. She didn’t know I’d be so hard to get rid of.”

He’s right. I didn’t.

I have tried many times to kick this addiction. More times than I care to count. Once, I was successful for a time. When I was pregnant with Ammon. Mainly because I didn’t have a choice. Unfortunately, that ‘reason’ won’t help me today.

I went through a rough patch last year. And decided at Christmas that enough was enough. I kicked the habit cold turkey - with the withdrawal symptoms and side-effects to prove it. I emerged at a place where I can drink Sunkist again and not have the insatiable urge to follow it with another. And another. And another. I’m not at all optimistic that I will ever get to a place where I will never drink again - that just isn’t a realistic statement to make. However, I can - in moderation - continue to enjoy this thing that makes me happy. And I'm more than okay with that.

Last night, Brian brought home dinner. From one of our favorite places in our little town. A place that sells Sunkist as a fountain drink - like many other places here, which made this move really easy and exciting. I actually didn’t want Sunkist. I told Brian that I didn’t need a drink. He got me one, anyway ... it was cheaper that way. I drank it, having a hard time finishing it, in fact. I went on throughout my night, productively doing all I needed to. Sunkist, and the need for another hit, nowhere in my mind.

Until I opened the fridge door later and was greeted by something that has surely been in there for weeks. Like a tidal wive - all I wanted to do was grab it and run off, hide in my closet, and guzzle it down. I didn’t. I fell into a hopelessly nasty mood. I returned to the fridge several times after for other things ... but, of course, all I saw was that label. Glaring at me like a neon sign.

I could easily drink it. But I know what would happen. And I don’t want to go there again. So for now ... I suffer. I fully intend on giving this slice of heaven to Brian whenever he gets home tonight.

But until then ... the only thing that is running through my mind is:

First I was afraid -

I was petrified.

Kept thinking I could never live

without you by my side.

But I spent so many nights

thinking how you did me wrong -

and I grew strong ...

I learned how to carry on.

And so you're back,

from outer space -

I just walked in to find you here

with that sad look upon your face.

I should have changed my stupid lock -

I should have made you leave your key -

If I had known for just one second

you'd be back to bother me.

Go on, now, go -

walk out the door.

Just turn around now ...

'cause you're not welcome anymore.

Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?

You think I'd crumble -

you think I'd lay down and die.

Oh no, not I -

I will survive.

Oh, as long as i know how to love

I know I will stay alive.

I've got all my life to live -

I've got all my love to give -

and I'll survive ...

I will survive ...

It took all the strength I had

not to fall apart -

kept trying hard to mend

the pieces of my broken heart.

And I spent oh-so-many nights

just feeling sorry for myself -

I used to cry ...

now I hold my head up high!

And you see me -

somebody new -

I'm not that chained up little person

still in love with you.

And so you felt like dropping in,

and just expect me to be free -

now I'm saving all my loving

for someone who's loving me!

Go on, now, go -

walk out the door.

Just turn around now ...

'cause you're not welcome anymore.

Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?

You think I'd crumble -

you think I'd lay down and die.

Oh no, not I -

I will survive!

Oh, as long as i know how to love

I know I will stay alive.

I've got all my life to live -

I've got all my love to give -

and I'll survive ...

I will survive ...

Oh ... I will survive.

the g kids | sneak peek

Last Saturday, I got together with a friend who also shares a passion for photography. We wanted to have an opportunity to practice, learn from each other and, well … play. It was a blessed change for me – the chance to have a good time and try some new things and love all on my camera … without the pressure of being on a real-live shoot.

The day was overcast and cold. Perfect. Just the way I like it. We met at one of my favorite places downtown – chances are, if I’ve taken photos for you, I’ve brought you here. We roamed aimlessly around – actually finding some new treasures that I can not wait to return to. Three of Sandy’s four children tagged along, and were our models for the day. And my … what fun I had with these few.

How I loved having the opportunity to capture their gorgeous smiles. To hear their sweet laughs. Truly – flashes of light.

Kylynn: Oh my. I could stare all day at your mesmerizing baby blues. The camera loves you. And … I’m thrilled to hear that you love the camera. I hope that you continue to cultivate this love – always striving to see the beauty in the world around you. And never, ever, forgetting the beautiful light that is inside of you. How I admired your calm, sweet spirit. What a stunning young woman you are – one I won’t soon forget.

Kaylie: Darling. I knew from the start that I would adore you. Your spunk oozes out every part of you. I loved listening to your personality. True – I very nearly fell over into the road when you commented to your sister (regarding one of those ‘cube’ cars): “I want to run into it just to give it some shape.” I loved trying to crack the surface of your carefully coy faƧade: The answer to every question I pointed in your direction being, “I don’t know” … accompanied by a sly little smile. After numerous attempts to find out what your hobbies were … what you liked most about homeschooling … what you wanted for your upcoming birthday … I finally pulled out a trick from my mother’s hat, and said, “Well, who should I ask?” Something that nearly always got an even broader smile to fly across your face. True, those ‘I don’t knows’ became a running joke between us throughout the afternoon. But, you know – I’ll always treasure our conversation about ‘9’ being better than ‘8’ – and that ‘10’ will be the best of them all. And, by the time we were done – I did find out what you wanted for your birthday. And I knew you were a bright ray of sunshine on that cloudy day. And I knew that I liked you. A lot. It’s tough to know much of what you’re about when you are not-quite-10. But, darling Kaylie – if you know nothing else – always remember that you are a beautiful young lady, who is cherished. That, my dear, is enough.

Ryon: Ah, my sweet. I’m so glad we bonded over how to mimic the perfect lion. I’m glad that you shared secrets with me. And that you loved my yellow watch – even though yours at home is ‘just silver’. And, even though I asked for them … you keep those gorgeous lashes of yours. You said you loved them. As do I.

Sandy: Thank you for that afternoon. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart.

While driving home, a song came shuffling through my iPod. And I couldn’t help but beam a smile for all the world to see. Simply put – it reminded me of my afternoon with these sweet faces. I hope I have the chance to see those flashes of light again. Until then – stay beautiful.

You're beautiful – every little piece, love.
Don't you know, you're really gonna be someone –
ask anyone.

And when you find everything you looked for –
I hope your life leads you back to my door.

Oh, but if it don't,
stay beautiful.

Enjoy. As I have.

for the autobot lover in you

For the autobot lover in all of you. And ... so my boys will stop bugging me.

A very giddy almost-thirty-year old came running in my office last night to show me the new toys that will be released for this film. A certain little fuzz-headed boy is excited to see 'Prem' (or Optimus Prime, eventhough he is really Bumblebee ... something that seriously distresses said boy's father). And I recognized Laserbeak before anyone else did ... so I am a very special person right now, here in Abbeville, USA.

Enjoy. Only 142 more days. Can we make it? Depends on who you ask.

the force is with us

I have to admit ... I love this. And my, how it reminded me of my boys. It is rare for us to walk through an automatic door ... and Brian not use the power of the force to open it.

Boys. Are fun.

Pause the tunes, and enjoy.

love is all you need

Here we sit … exactly a month away from Valentine’s Day.

And here I sit … in a home still celebrating some serious Christmas cheer. The lovely Becky Higgins once said that, “As far as I’m concerned, the Christmas season lasts as long as I’m eating fudge.” And, like her … I’m still eating fudge.

I know this doesn't sound very lovey-dovey ... but those who think that is a tad ridiculous can just deal.

But, back to the reason for this season: Love.

I’m not one of those people that believe that Valentine’s Day is a ‘made-up holiday’ (cough: Brian). I enjoy the special time that is set aside to relish in the loves you have in your life. I also believe that we shouldn’t restrict the profession of love to just February the 14th. I accept that ‘love’ is a verb – it is an action, something that we do. And that is something that we should all remember the other 364 days of the year.

I strongly believe that there is much we can all do to make the world around us a better place. We have a powerful ability to brighten the lives of those we come in contact with. We have the authority to control our outlook. We have the opportunity to share the light of Christ.

The foundation of that? Love.

In honor of this season, I’m sharing some prints courtesy of Becky Higgins. Enjoy. And don’t forget … love is all you need.

hit the road, jack | why, hello there

Nice to meet you.

Frankly, I'm pretty stoked to send 2010 packing. As bad as that sounds ... it hasn't been the best of years for me. And I'm thrilled as grits to have a clean slate coming my way. I am - without a doubt - insanely excited. Really.

May this upcoming year be all that you wish for. May it be rich with blessings and experiences and memories.

Here's to a new year. Here's to a fresh start. Here's to 2011.

Here's looking at you, kid.
