eleanor is one ... and our visit | sneak peek

On July 4th, Ammon and I took a little road trip with my mom down to Gulf Breeze - for a quick little vacation at Chez Salmon. As my dear friend told me long ago: “I will feed you well and entertain you even better.” And she couldn’t have been more correct.

We arrived in time to enjoy a divine dinner with the Salmons - rotisserie chicken (a throwback to our recent trip to Orlando with Amber, which you, my readers, may read about before 2057), yummy potatoes, green bean casserole and watermelon - followed by fireworks over the bay. And before bed - there was that homemade strawberry shortcake with home-whipped cream and ice cream. Yes ... you read that right.

The next day threatened rain - but ended up favoring us with sunny skies. A lazy morning, blueberry muffins for breakfast and lasagna and salad for lunch, with the ‘look of love’ courtesy of our favorite Mr. Darcy in the afternoon - made for just about the most perfect day.

After naps, we packed up and headed back to the bay for Eleanor’s 1-year photo session. As my mom and Amm built castles in the sand, I spent some time with the two most gorgeous girls on the beach. It’s hard to believe that Eleanor is 1 already. My how time flies. She is, quite simply, the sweetest and funniest 1-year old that I know. How I’ve loved watching her grow, and watching my friend embrace her role as a mother. There’s no one like her. I’m honored to know, and love, them both.

Before we knew it, it was time to leave. And I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t want to do it. I contented myself with the PF Changs that was in my future for dinner, but it was still a bittersweet departure for me. We bid adieu to Russell and Eleanor, and followed Amber to Destin for dinner. Of course, being the day after the 4th of July, we ran into hairy traffic and a horrendous wait-list. It was decided that Amber needed to head on home sans Changs. Mom, Amm and I decided though, in the end, to stay - with that decadence being our only option for dinner before our long journey home. The wait ended up not being too terrible, though it was well after 10pm when we sat down at our table. And thus began our interesting travel back to Alabama ... in true Thomas fashion. My home didn’t welcome me back until nearly 3am - but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Our short stay was everything it promised to be - and more. What a wonderful time we had. And how could we not? With that shortcake and Mr. Darcy; with staying up too late talking and laughing; with Russell being caught reading Mockingjay rather than studying. Heck, I was even sent home with furniture.

But more than that, the Salmon home is always in whispering distance of heaven, and I love it for that. I reveled in the sweet spirit and perfect calm that resides there ... right down to the fresh flowers on my nightstand. Amber’s promise held true: We were fed well and entertained better (and that proved to be a tall order). I went home recharged - and ever thankful to have this dear family as my friends. How I look forward to seeing them again.

Should you be in the neighborhood, I recommend Chez Salmon. Wholeheartedly. But only if you take me with you.

Enjoy.

sensible shoes

Earlier this year, the beloved Stephanie Nielson of The NieNie Dialogues posted a series of Motherhood Essays on her blog. This one ... well ... let’s make a long story short and just say it ‘stood out’.
Initially putting it in my inspiration folder to eventually forget about and lose file away, I ran across it completely by accident yesterday in my travels.
Have I mentioned lately that I don’t believe in coincidences?
Because I don’t.
Again - let’s make a long story short and just say that I needed to read this again yesterday. And I feel pressed to share it today.
See? I knew it would inspire me, after all.

Sensible Shoes | by: Emily Baer
Motherhood is mostly about wearing the right shoes.
We are ballet dancers with our newborns in the middle of the night. We are construction workers on the living room carpet with our toddlers and their building blocks. We are scientists and mystics when banishing bad dreams and monsters in the closet. We are coaches, cheerleaders, teammates when life gets tough and faith is thin on the ground. We are therapists and sometimes we are drill sergeants. We are intuitive, understanding, and forgiving. We are the kissers of boo-boos, the medical team on the field, the picker-uppers, the duster-offers, the go-get-em-now-ers.
We are the teenage battering rams. We are the least-liked chefs. We are the ponytail wearers, the carpool drivers, the wipers of smudges, the please-and-thank-you enforcers.
We are the grateful recipients of dandelions and painted paper hearts, of whispered I love you’s and little hands held in the dark; and also of rolled eyes and skeptic pre-teen attitudes.
We are a brave face. We are pilgrims on our knees asking for guidance, direction, and a few tablespoons of grace. We are the tearful-proud standing in the corners, watching our little ones blossom for all the world to see.
We are believers of make believe and impossible dreams. We are the keepers of maps, the holders of keys, pilots and co-pilots when those dreams take flight (and they regularly do).
We are champions of the underdog. We are party planners and cupcake decorators, banner hangers and town criers when the world should know how wonderful our children are.
We are the oft under-consulted consultants. We are collectors, curators of our children’s hopes and histories. We are the ride to the movies, the ticket to freedom, the tether to self discipline.
We are the first sought when something is amiss. We are the seekers and the finders, be it mittens, or homework papers, or broken heart pieces. We are a harbor. And a force. We are just the right words at just the right moment; a quiet resolve to see things all the way through.
And when it is entirely necessary, we are professors of lost arts, like how to spin around barefoot in the sunshine.

128 days

It’s almost time to end this chapter of my life.

mark and sara | sneak peek

I was fortunate enough to be able to take some anniversary photos for these two a couple of weeks back. And what a fun - albeit hot and gnatty - afternoon it was.
Mark and Sara. Some special folks who have done an infinite and unimaginable amount for me over the years ... and who mean even more to me.
Of course I would do this for them.
All I have to say is: I hope to have what they still have after 35 years.

baby isabella | sneak peek

It was a pleasure to spend some time with this precious baby girl, in her beautiful home, reflecting on the priceless gifts that our Heavenly Father bestows. This little one has the most endearing spirit - and the pure calm that radiated around her was a blessing to me that day.
Welcome to the world, sweet Isabella. What a priceless gift you are.
